“Hammer Hands”

Monday, July 27th, 2009

As you know, each week here at YLDSR, Rebecca Cressman brings a new interview to the table on her “personal touch” on-demand segment. This week, her guest is musician Shaun Barrowes, a powerhouse of a guy, with the savvy and work ethic that an independent music career can be built on. Shaun represents a generation of young musicians with roots in great American musical traditions, but with the kind of vision that can shape future sounds, too.

As a Latter-day Saint, Shaun had an opportunity to let his light shine before the world, as it were, when a few seasons ago he made it to the top 48 on American Idol. In fact, as you’ll hear in this week’s “Personal Touch” interview, it’s on American Idol where he first heard the comments that gave rise to his nickname: “Hammer Hands.”

We thought that, along with the interview, you might enjoy seeing a bit of brother Barrowes in action. Here’s his live video of the popular “Ain’t No Sunshine When She’s Gone.”

Grateful

Some have asked recently about some songs we’ve added recently to the YLDSR playlist from the album “Songs of Praise” by Paul Cardall. “I thought Paul Cardall was an instrumentalist. What’s this album all about?” is typical of the sort of comment we’ve been hearing. It’s true – brother Cardall has an extensive catalog of lovely instrumental recordings. But a couple of years ago, he struck up a fruitful working relationship with evangelical minister and songwriter Steele Croswhite. Cardall asked Croswhite if he’d join him as a vocalist on “Songs of Praise.” The album is a departure for Cardall, but has been honored by fans and critics alike, earning awards from organizations like the LDS Booksellers Association and others. We’re glad you’re enjoying the music, and thought you might like to see the music video for the song “Grateful,” from Paul’s album. With Steele Croswhite on vocals, here’s Paul Cardall’s song “Grateful,” from the album “Songs of Praise.”

temple

Summertime is the time for vacations and family. We recently went on a brief vacation to Florida with our two boys. It was a really great time and we enjoyed it a lot. We went to the beach and visited a wildlife park. Saw alligators and a lot of birds. Swam and aet out a lot. My son played in a clay court tennis tournament, his first time playing on a clay surface. Won the consolation round. He loved it. We relaxed. (all except for the thunder and lightning storm we went through while flying there. I am not a big fan of flying).
When we got back home, I went to the temple. I was struck by the depth of Peace I felt upon walking through the doors of the Lords house. Immediately I felt warm, content, and safe. While waiting to serve in the temple I had some time to ponder the feelings I had. I had just come from a vacation Where I had a great time, relaxed, and enjoyed my family. But none of that could come near the bliss that I felt just by sitting within the walls of my Fathers House. I was moved to tears  (a quick trip for me). I am guilty of many things – one of them being that I rarely take the time to ponder. My life takes me from one list of To-Do’s to another. I was there to serve the Lord, and yet it is always me who reaps the blessings of being in the temple. The temple to me is where we can have a true “vacation” from the world.

My oldest son is getting married in the temple in one week. I am overcome! I am so grateful for this blessing. He is marrying a darling girl that we love. He is doing it the way Heavenly Father wants it done. He has always been a boy to do the right thing. His father and I were sealed in the temple 5 years into our marriage. I know that temple marriage is no guarantee of perfect marital happiness every single minute, but I do believe when you set the foundation in stone, you have much less chance to fall. I have a testimony of the temple, and the power that lies within it.

Talk to you soon,
Sherri Schatz
